Burns and Brown General Store
This building was constructed in 1918 after a fire destroyed the previous structure which housed a pool room, barber shop and bowling alley. The building was constructed for the Burns and Brown General Store. While the store was filled with shopping activity, it was also the scene of a few crimes. Between 1921 and 1922 over $6,000 worth of merchandise was stolen from the Burns and Brown store on two separate occasions. In the first robbery the bandits made off with over $5,000 in goods and merchandise. The burglars entered the building through the skylight. They loaded the stolen merchandise onto the firm's own rig. The horse returned by itself just before daybreak. Most of the stolen merchandise was from the dry goods and ladies wear departments.
After this incident the building was fitted with iron bars on all the windows. However, in March 1922 the Burns and Brown's general store suffered its second robbery. The $1,000 stolen goods included rubber boots, suits, neckties, shirts, cashmere socks, underwear, gloves, handkerchiefs, scarves, mitts, dresses, coats, and several pairs of ladies' slippers. The criminals also helped themselves to a cake left on the counter, and bananas from the grocery section that they devoured in the store. Neither the goods nor the criminals were ever tracked down.
Richman's
In 1928, the building was sold to two business partners from Winnipeg. They established the Fiterman and Richman's general store, and remained in partnership until 1934 when Fiterman left the business.
The store became the Richman Brothers for 15 years and later was just called Richman's. Izzy Richman sold the business in August 1978. The Richman's store had served Humboldt and area for 50 years.
JayDees Men's Wear
The store was re-opened in 1978 under the name JayDees Men's Wear by new owner Joe Draude. The store sold a variety of clothing styles for every member of the family and operated until 1983.
Video Quest and Oldies & Goodies
The next enterprise in this building was the Video Quest Movie Gallery which operated from 1989 - 2004, followed by Oldies & Goodies Boutique from 2006 - 2008.
